Explore untamed Alaska. Kodiak is an amazing remote wilderness archipelago situated at the top of the Aleutian Island chain.
From the minute I stepped off the plane 7 years ago, I knew Kodiak Island would capture my heart and my imagination. As an avid outdoor enthusiast, it should not have come as a surprise to me how much I would love this place. For the entire two weeks we were there on vacation, and for a year after I made the permanent move I would just stop and look in awe at the beauty around me. Commonly, Kodiak is thought of as a “bucket list” destination for hunters and fisherman. I’ll provide you plenty of information on the best places to do those things and make your trip to Kodiak one you will never forget. These activities, though, really are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what Kodiak Island has to offer the adventure traveler. Check out the Planning a Trip to Kodiak Blog pages for lots of travel tips and information to make your trip here more like coming home that visiting for the first time.

Outdoor activities
Outdoor activities abound in this unspoiled and untamed island known to locals simply as “The Rock”.
Around the middle of May, winter finally goes into hibernation, making room for the mild summer. Spring and fall are barely recognizable as distinct seasons on our Rock. Hunters and Fisherman fill up the Alaska Airlines jets that fly into Kodiak 2 to 3 times per day.
If your only observation of Kodiak tourism was the crowded airport you’d quickly form an opinion that summers on the emerald isle varied little from the overcrowded rivers on mainland Alaska where the term “combat fishing” was coined.
Once you’re out of the small airport and begin your journey along the merely 100 miles of road that make up the inhabited 10% of America’s second largest island (second only to Hawaii’s big island with one tenth the population) you’ll notice that the rivers and mountain trails visible from the road are refreshingly thin of crowds. It is easy to find a spot in the vast Kodiak outdoors that you can selfishly enjoy by yourself or with your own group of traveling companions.
While hunting and fishing are the most common reasons people plan a trip to Kodiak, there are so many more activities that are worth including in your trip.
